Stevie Banch of Spyder Baby
Interview via Email 9/21/05

Stevie Banch is the obscenely sexy and talented singer/guitarist of Spyder Baby, a industrial/rock band from Detroit. I want to thank him for taking the time for an interview and look forward to seeing what this band has to off in 2006!! Stevie seems like a very kind and intelligent guy! Stay tuned for a review of their CD when released in March 2006 followed by concert coverage!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
jo: Tell me about how Spyder Baby was created and a little
bit about each band member and their music background. Have you found the
drummer and keyboard player yet?
Stevie: The " BAND " started for me in 2003. I released an E.P. in summer 2004
to get the preverbal ball-gage rolling. I wrote, produced, and played all
instruments minus some live drums on the E.P. and on the new c.d.(yet untitled)
as well with exception of a song that I wrote- called "BITTER" .that one was
produced by AL from Ministry and he made it sound astounding, an impressive
talent that Al, a true Rock n' Roll Legend. Um.....The Gathering of musicians
was for the most part all thru word of mouth and befriending. Bass Player: -Eric
Griffin is from the band The Murder Dolls, I had met him @ the House of Blues in
Anaheim at a BLS Show and etched a friendship which led to his " hiring in".
Guitarist: Dee Jay was a referred to me by my Web designer Stephen, where the
two knuckle-heads mushroomed up as kids in the Chicago area. I am talking to a
few guys right now regarding the drum and keyboard positions, its just a matter
of time to find the right people.
jo: How did you come up with the name Spyder Baby
and what does it mean?
Stevie: Spyder Baby was a sobriquet someone gave for me and milled itself as the
band title. Their was a movie of the same name but was not directly an
influence.
jo: I listened to the songs on your site and in my
opinion I would describe your sound as Marilyn Manson meets NIN, meets
Murderdolls. How would you describe your music to someone who hasn't heard it
before?
Stevie: So, to describe the sound of Spyderbaby.... um.
well..It's a clutch of rock 'n roll inspirations .I was always a big fan of 70's
glam/punk i.e: T-rex The Stooges, The MC5, David Bowie. Alice Cooper, New York
Dolls, ALL the cool stuff that came out of Detroit really...Also Punk stuff like
The Germs, Black Flag, Misfits (Samhain for that matter), Bad Brains, Dead Boys,
The Cramps, G.B.H.and X. Then Mix that up with AC/DC, Ministry, Killing Joke,
Skinny Puppy, Sisters of Mercy. Add 3 parts Motor Head, 2 parts Black Sabbath, 1
part Einsturzende Neubauten,stir then shake lightly.
jo: When do you find you are most creative with
your song writing?
Stevie: At night
jo: How long have you been playing guitar and
singing and when did you first start? What made you pick up a guitar for the
first time?
Stevie: I 've been playing guitar and singing for 16
years, the love of music made me buy a guitar and figure out how to make my own
sounds, or as I like to say "turning ideas into noise since1989"
jo: What impact do you want your music to have on
your fans?
Stevie: If your music speaks for you then don't
interrupt.
jo: How would you describe your stage show?
Stevie: visceral passion
jo: What is your best quality? What is your worst
habit?
Stevie: I don't give a two shits about being a rockstar I
just like to make music so I'll never sell out, some people call that integrity.
I suppose my worst habit is smoking.
jo: I noticed on myspace that Spyder Baby has a pretty extensive tour already lined up for 2006. Will you be touring at all in 2005?
Stevie: Just promoting and doing press and
interviews like this till the record comes out in march.
jo: What do you think about boot leg recordings?
Stevie: Don't mind a bit until you sell it to make
money...real music fans do it to remember the night they saw a cool band ,others
do it for profit, then your just a shit head weasel.
jo: Best concert you ever attended as a fan?
Stevie: Johnny Cash
jo: Give me one word to describe yourself.
Stevie: Halloween
jo: What does a typical day in your life consist
of?
Stevie: Wake up in the morning ,drink a pot of coffee ,start to work on music
until I get tired which is around the 10 hour mark, watch a movie then start all
over the next day...when I have time off I like to watch the wild life and ride
my tractor. I relocated from the city
to a 17 acre Victorian farmhouse in the country side...um ..so back to the
tractor...its not a little riding mower by any means, it's a 3000 series John
Deere w/ a front mounted loader, I could take a small town out with no problem,
it's hellish fun, but also a necessity for the maintenance of the property. I
styled it off with a nice set of bullhorns on the hood.
jo: If you were a cartoon character who would you
be and why?
Stevie: Captain Harlock, Japanese animation, he's not good
or evil, kinda in-between, somewhat amoral, I just relate to it.
jo: Do you have any phobias?
Stevie: Hip-Hop
jo: Where do you see yourself in five years?
Stevie: see answer #6
jo: What is the craziest thing you have ever done?
Stevie: Nothing too crazy
jo: If you could switch lives for 24 hours with
anyone dead or alive who would it be and why?
Stevie: I have no desire to be someone else really.
jo: If you could get one "do over" in life is there
anything you would change? Why or why not?
Stevie: No regrets
jo: If you were an animal which animal would you be
and why??
Stevie: Thought I would say spider didn't ya? I wish
people would be human, they act like animals all ready.
jo: When will the next CD be released and can you
tell me a little bit about it?
Stevie: March ,this spring. Its real, its heavy, and most importantly, its dark.
