77/15/05 Email Interview w/Drama Club's Vocalist/Guitarist, Nick Coyle

jo: DC is a relatively new project of former Lifer/Stalemate/Seether. Tell me how this collaboration started, how long you have been together and a little bit about each member of the band.

Nick: before this i was living in chicago and playing with ex-filter members geno lenardo and steve gillis i a new project tentitivly called "widescreen".  after a few months i decided it wasn't what i wanted to do musically so i moved back to PA and formed the drama club in early 2004 with nate beven(guitar) and rj maclean(bass).  after a few replacements and the addition of a second guitarist, jon novakovich, the drama club was complete.  so we've actually only been together a few months.

jo: How would you describe DC music to someone not familiar with your sound?

Nick: it's rock and fuckin' roll!

jo: What do you want your fans to get out of your music?

Nick: we want our fans to have a good time.  too many bands (and their fans) are so angry for no reason.  it used to be sex, drugs, and rock and roll we're tring to bring that back.( ha, ha)

jo: Musical Influences?

Nick: we all listen to so many different things from the beatles to slayer.  we're just big fans of music.

jo:What influences the writing of songs?

Nick: insomnia

jo: What is your fave DC song right now? How about to perform Live?

Nick: i like them all.

jo: If you could tour with anyone, dead or alive, who and why?

Nick: led zepplin-because it's zepplin/ guns n' roses(circa1987)- they fucking rock!

jo: How did you come up with the name of the band and what does it mean?

Nick: our lives seem to be filled with drama.  the drama club is a tribute to it.

jo: What bands are you currently listening to?

Nick: dredg, def leppard,  gorrillaz, nin, queens of the stone age, coheed and cambria, curtis mayfield - are just a few i have in itunes.  i've been listening to about 3000 songs on shuffle.

jo: What made each of you decide on a career in music and how old were you when you made that choice?
Nick: i've been playing since i was 12 and my first gig was at 13.  there was only about 10 people there but it was a start.  music is all i've ever done.

jo: Fave artist/band of all time?

Nick: pink floyd (after much thought)

jo: If I could grant you three wishes, what would they be?

Nick: unlimited wishes- then i would ask for all kinds of senseless shit.

jo: Who has been the most supportive of your career(s).

Nick: my family

jo: For the ladies...boxers, briefs or commando?

Nick: right now i'm commando. wanna see! (this is jo here, now why doesn't anybody ask me that in live interviews? huh??)

jo: I love the DC version of "Here Comes the Rain Again". Why did you choose that song?

Nick: thanks.  i've always loved that song.  one day we started jamming it and it felt like a DC song.  it evolved from there.

jo: Tell me a little bit about the new CD. Are the songs based on real life experiences?

Nick: it's a 7 song ep titled "greatest hits" and it's definitely my best work to date.  it was produced by bill appleberry (the wallflowers, adema) the songs are 1/4 personal experiences, 1/4 other people's experiences, 1/4 television, and 1/4 things i haven't experienced yet.  that's the best way i can describe them.

jo: Message for your fans?

Nick: to everyone who has loved (and hated) my music over the years thanks for listening.  this is just the beginning!
